We’d a useful Millfield workout tonight against Scottish senior football’s other HAFC on Tuesday, with game time given to 17 players against a very useful highly fit young Hamilton Academical side.
Our Lanarkshire visitors despite their youth showed themselves to be of decidedly decent standard, and after spending quite a bit of time in our half they eventually took the lead just over half an hour in – ample opportunity to clear the danger wasn’t taken and ultimately we were duly punished. Not all that long afterwards Accies’ big number 9 headed in their second from an inviting cross from the left, suspicions of offside not supported by the ref.
Four interval changes to our eleven quickly paid dividends as Tom Davies halved the deficit in fifty minutes, converting from close range from Evan Bonar’s tempting left wing cross. Despite a good few goal efforts on our part over the next half hour an equaliser eluded us, and the Accies restored their two goal advantage with just over ten minutes remaining. Seamus Russell, however, reduced the gap on eighty six minutes, heading home from a similar position as that from which he’d equalised against Dunbar on Saturday though not quite so powerfully – and right at the death following further pressure on the visitors’ goal we drew level when the Accies number five had the misfortune to head into his own net.
Big thanks to Hamilton for coming through – they’d some very handy players in their ranks and it’d be a very interesting exercise monitoring individuals’ progress in the coming years. We wish all involved at the Accies all the very best with the difficult challenges they face currently, and hope they come out the other end stronger.
