The Hi Hi’s crossed the border for their first pre season match at Berwick last Saturday. It’s probably worth mentioning that for the last couple of years, pre seasons are not what they used to be. The interval between seasons seems to be getting shorter with the Hi Hi’s only playing their last competitive match of 2022/23 just a matter of weeks ago! Anyway a visit to Lowland League Berwick Rangers and their impressive home at Shielfield Park would be a stiff test for the Millfield men. Although Haddington were without no fewer than eight squad members, coaches Graham Marron and Roy Craig were able to field four of their five new signings.
Haddington started promisingly with both of the McGarry brothers having early chances but some hesitant defending three minutes in gifted Berwick a penalty kick from which they opened the scoring. The visitors continued to create chances but they were caught out with a long ball up the right and the ball was cut back for a Berwick forward to beat goalkeeper Cornet with a low shot. There was little between the sides after that and this continued into the second half with both sides making changes. With all substitutes committed Haddington had to play the final 15 minutes with ten men after Nick Aitchison had to come off. Despite this, they finished the match the stronger side and when Gary Windram reduced the deficit in 78 minutes, the Hi Hi’s pushed for an equaliser with Windram forcing a great save from the home goalkeeper and the referee ignoring strong claims for a handball in the box.
