The Millfield pitch was in good condition for Haddington’s historic Scottish Cup tie against Formartine United from the Highland League. Unfortunately overhead conditions left a lot to be desired and both teams had to contend with driving rain and strong gale force winds. The Hi Hi’s played against the elements in the first half and seemed to find it easier than their more fancied opponents. The opening goal came in the opening minutes of the second half when a hopeful high ball seemed to get caught in the wind and wrong footed home ‘keeper Cornet with the ball squirming over the line. Cornet pulled off a great save to keep his side in it and Haddington took up the challenge. Hill missed a good opportunity as the home side stepped up the pressure and with four minutes remaining substitute Stewart O’Neill found the equaliser with a neat turn and finish. Minutes later the home side were caught out pushing forward and the visitors took advantage and Cornet was beaten by a fantastic finish. Harsh on the Hi Hi’s who had more than matched there more fancied opponents. There were no failures in the home side and they did the town proud in their first season competing in the Scottish Cup.
