History will be made at Millfield on Boxing Day when Haddington hosts its first ever Scottish Cup tie. Having produced the shock of the Second Preliminary Round when they beat BSC Glasgow from the Lowland League, at Alloa, the Hi Hi’s have it all to do again when they meet Highland League side Formartine United in the first round proper. These sides met at old Millfield almost 50 years ago in January 1971 in the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup with the Hi Hi’s winning 3 -1. It will be a different story tomorrow with the visitors playing two tiers above the Hi Hi’s and they will be strong favourites. They secured their place in the third round when they beat fellow Highland League side Turriff United 2 -1 at Kynoch Park, Keith. Haddington suffered a double blow in the last round when both Joe Hamill and Guy McGarry both picked up two yellow cards and will miss Saturdays’ match. Both players will be missed, especially Hamill’s experience at this level. In normal times this match could have seen a record crowd at Millfield but once again it will take place behind closed doors with supporters having to make do with highlights on the internet.
