Haddington’s Scottish Cup replay against Deveronvale last Saturday was the first Scottish cup tie at Millfield in front of spectators, and the Hi Hi’s didn’t let their supporters down. The match attracted one of the best crowds ever seen at Millfield and the huge local support gave the team tremendous backing. Deveronvale, having scored with virtually the last kick off the ball in Banff, came fast out of the blocks, when they opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. This was a test of Haddington’s resolve but they were soon on level terms when Watson set up McGarry for a fine equaliser. Although there were to be no more goals this wasn’t down to lack of effort in an entertaining match. The Hi Hi’s probably shaded the second half but it took an impressive late save from Dale Cornet to take the match to penalties. Cornet’s one penalty save gave the home side the advantage and they scored all five spot kicks to go through. Euan Watson’s fifth spot kick triggered wild celebrations and the sight of the home players celebrating with their young fans behind the goal will live long in the memory. Haddington will travel north again in the second round when they visit Brechin City at Glebe Park on Saturday, 23rd October. Brechin were relegated form the SPFL last season and now play in the Highland League. They will be firm favourites to reach the third round.
