Haddington’s League Cup pedigree is pretty good having reached the final last season and the semi final the season before that. Last Saturday they opened this season’s competition with a visit to Fife to meet Oakley United at Blairwood Park. Despite the two league gap, no one was expecting an easy ride especially with the challenging playing surface. There was a surprise in the Haddington line up with central defender Cammy Watson making his first appearance since damaging his cruciate ligament over two years ago. Cammy was a key member of the squad that won promotion to the Premier League in 2022 and his injury happened at Dalgety Bay against Inverkeithing early in season 22-23. Both Aaron Ewins and Gary Windram also returned to the starting line up. The home side had their share of the game in the opening half but the better chances fell to the visitors and Gary Windram missed the best chance of the half when he blasted over with only the goalkeeper to beat. Haddington looked the better side after the break and they deservedly broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Tom Davies did well on the right and set up Grant Rose for a neat finish. That proved to be the only goal of a keenly contested ninety minutes which also saw recent signing, goalkeeper Jamie Smith, record his first clean sheet for the club. The Hi Hi’s now look forward to the second round draw.
