There was an exciting end to last week’s League Cup tie at Millfield when the Hi Hi’s scored two goals in the final five minutes to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Luncarty and go through to the second round of the competition. At the same time the home side ended a six game run without a win.
The Perthshire side had provided stuffy opposition at Millfield back in August and only two weeks ago had defeated Haddington with the only goal of the game at Luncarty. So it was no surprise that there was another keenly contested match. There was little between the sides in the opening half with the Hi Hi’s having the edge. They suffered a blow when they lost skipper Nick Aitchison with a knee injury before the interval. The home side broke the deadlock just before the interval when Robbie Peffers hit the post and Tom Davies scored his first Millfield goal from the rebound. However within a minute Luncarty were level when the home defence failed to clear and Cornet was beaten from close range. Then Alex McNaughton looked to have restored the home lead when he forced the ball past the goalkeeper but was thwarted by a brilliant goal line clearance.
There was early drama in the second half when home goalkeeper Cornet conceded a penalty and redeemed himself with a terrific save at his left hand post. Guy McGarry came close with a flashing header from Windram’s cross and then Luncarty shocked the home side by scoring from close range in the 81st minute after the Haddington defence missed several opportunities to clear the ball. The Hi Hi’s set about saving the tie and substitute Riley Haston came close with a header. On 89 minutes full back Mikey Robertson collected a loose ball on the right and his cross found Guy McGarry who headed in from six yards. Not to be outdone Guy’s brother Lucas scored the winning goal in the 94th minute. Luncarty failed to clear a corner from the right and McGarry showed great skill in setting himself up to beat the goalkeeper with a powerful volley on the turn.
