The Hi Hi’s put in a terrific performance in the Scottish Cup at Brechin last Saturday, and as the match drew to a conclusion, a Millfield replay looked on the cards. But with 90 minutes on the clock Athletic full back, Corey Robertson, turned a low cross from the right into his own goal and the Angus side breathed a huge sigh of relief having been given a huge scare by Haddington. The match was similar to the previous round in Banff with the visitors the better side in the first half and the home side putting in a strong second half performance.  Midway through the first half, Guy McGarry pounced on a loose pass 40 yards from goal and kept his nerve to open the scoring with a fine finish. Soon after Shaun Hill had an opportunity to add to the lead but was crowded out close to goal. Brechin stepped up their game in the second half and equalised through a header from a corner kick. The home side now held the upper hand but it looked as though Haddington had weathered the storm as the match entered the closing stages. Few could have grudged the Hi Hi’s a second chance, but Robertson’s sliced clearance put Brechin into the third round draw and once again a late goal had put paid to Haddington’s Scottish Cup hopes. The Millfield side had their biggest away support in years and they certainly didn’t let their supporters down. Interestingly, the official match statistics showed that the Hi Hi’s had edged possession over the ninety minutes.
