A late winner in Fife against Kennoway Star Hearts, coupled with Leith Athletic’s home defeat to Thornton Hibs, meant that the Hi Hi’s clinched the EOS Conference A title with two games remaining. Once again manager Scott Bonar was without at least six regulars but he was able to bring back Corey Robertson for his first game since the start of February. The visitors broke the deadlock in the closing stages of the first half when skipper Shaun Hill found the net with a spectacular effort from the right wing. The big Haddington support fully expected a victory procession, playing down the slope in the second half. But Kennoway had other ideas and they stunned the visitors with an equaliser midway through the half. The Hi Hi’s dug deep and they scored what proved to be the winner, and league winning goal, in the 85th minute. They were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and Jones swept a low shot into the net. News had come through that Leith were trailing to Thornton Hibs and as that game had kicked off at 3.00pm, there was an agonising wait until the final result from Peffermill was confirmed – cue title winning celebrations at Treaton Park. The championship trophy will be presented to the Hi Hi’s following their final home match of the season against Edinburgh United at Millfield on Saturday.
