The Hi Hi’s avoided a potential banana skin when they beat Heriot Watt University in the second round of the League Cup at Millfield last Saturday. The students are usually difficult opponents, a well coached team full of talented players, and they certainly tested Haddington over the ninety minutes. Manager Scott Bonar was without several players through injury with skipper Nick Aitchison, Seamus Russell, and Guy McGarry all sidelined. Ross King, Robbie Peffers, and Riley Haston all came into the starting line up.
There was little between the sides in the opening half but it was the home side that broke the deadlock when Gary Windram scored with a well placed shot from outside the box. Gabri Auriemma replaced Riley Haston for the second half and he was instrumental in the second goal. Collecting the ball on the left wing he took out the Heriot Watt central defence with a well placed cross leaving Tom Davies the simple task of heading past the exposed goalkeeper. Davies has certainly made an impact since his transfer from Arniston Rangers and he has been a regular on the score sheet since breaking his duck against Tynecastle at Meggetland, a few weeks ago.
The visitors never gave up and fashioned a number of opportunities but they failed to get the ball past Dale Cornet in the Haddington goal.
This victory sets up a derby cup clash with county rivals, Dunbar United, who, as expected, beat Edinburgh United in their second round tie.
