Despite some late concerns about the Millfield playing surface, Haddington were able to play their first competitive match of 2025, when Premier Division leaders Musselburgh Athletic provided the opposition. This allowed the Hi Hi’s to eventually pay tribute to the late Jim Thomson who sadly passed away in early December. Jim, a former President and Secretary, would have celebrated 50 years with the club next season and he was a popular figure at Millfield. Four pipers from Haddington Pipe Band generously gave their time to play some suitable music in memory of Jim. This was followed by a minutes applause at the request of Jim’s family. Haddington were also able to unveil their new stand, and it was well filled by some of the 350 crowd.

Manager Scott Bonar was without both central midfield players Ali Simpson and Seamus Russell and Craig Reid filled the gap in the middle of the park. There was also a debut for recent signing, Ryan Quinn from Penicuik Athletic and he teamed up with Grant Rose and the returning Tom Davies in attack. Haddington more than matched the league leaders in an entertaining first half and the Hi Hi’s could well have been ahead before they eventually took the lead. Grant Rose and Tom Davies came close before a well placed pass from Gary Windram set young Aaron Ewins free and he was brought down as he raced in on goal. Tom Davies made no mistake from the spot. Musselburgh picked up the pace after the interval but Haddington were comfortable on their lead despite most of the play taking place in their half. It took a mistake to gift the visitors the equaliser on the hour mark and then goalkeeper Campbell McLellan was given no chance when Anderson let fly from 25 yards to put the visitors ahead. It stayed this way until the closing minutes when Jordan Smith added a third with a header.
